We're going to hold a workshop for all San Diego FTC League teams on Monday Jan 16 (Martin Luther King Day) from 1-4pm so if you'd like some help troubleshooting a hardware or software problem, or want access to a full field to try your autonomous program or practice driving, come and bring your robot. We have limited tools here and no drill press or bandsaw so bring whatever you think you'll need. We are located in the University City neighborhood - if you're interested in participating, RSVP to us at [email protected] to get directions and details and so we can get a count.
Excited to be at the new season's Kickoff and see the unveiling of Velocity Vortex! No need to keep the robot small and light this year so it's back to the big huge robots again! It seems the new game gives a lot of advantage to veteran teams who participated in Cascade Effect two years ago (or Vex last year) because the ball shooter mechanisms could be much the same. It's too bad they couldn't have used a totally novel scoring item so rookie teams wouldn't start with another disadvantage. It will be fun analyzing strategy!
Also, take a look at the new San Diego FTC website that we've drafted for our region to help keep everyone in the loop. Let us know if you have any suggestions or corrections. Special Commendation from San Diego City Council President Sherri S. Lightner -- July 4, 20169/12/2016 At the University City neighborhood 2016 Fourth of July celebration, we were honored to receive a Special Commendation from City Council President Sherri S. Lightner for Third Place (Captain, Finalist Alliance of Edison Division) at the FTC World Championship held in St. Louis, MO. We want to thank Jennifer Kearns on Council President Lightner's staff, Barry Bernstein and George Odero of the UC Celebration committee, and Sandy Lippe from the La Jolla Village News for putting us in contact and arranging for this meeting.
We had a fun time at the SouthWest RiSE Summer of Robotics event at the San Diego County Fair. Some of our team members got to try their hand at driving Hugo, our robot - not an easy task. In addition, we recruited a new team member, Lucas, since he was graduating from his old team 8606 Intergalactic Dragons. The organizers also gave us special recognition for our 3rd Place finish at the FTC World Championship! We were very pleased to receive Certificates of Recognition from our state Assemblymember Brain Maienschein for our team's recent successes:
We had an incredible time at Worlds! Our robot Hugo performed very well amongst the top robots from around the world, and it appeared we would be a top seed team. 4997 graciously invited us to practice with them the final evening, and we found we had a good rapport. In the end, we were ranked 2nd in the Edison Division. We chose 4997 Masquerade and 5110 Wingus & Dingus as our allies, won against the #3 seed alliance, but lost against the #1 seed alliance (5916 BoBots). They ended up winning against the #1 seed from Franklin Division, and we ended up in 3rd place overall! Our booth display also tied for 2nd in the new Crowd Favorite Pit contest! Several of our team parents joined us in Oakland for the Super-Regional so we got to share this exciting event with them, including some team dinners out. Thanks to a tremendous effort from our mentors, Sheila and Mike Azeka, we created our booth with a Hugo theme (the steampunky movie) - a workshop inside of a clocktower overlooking Paris - so we had a really unique pit. In the competition, we did well enough to be first pick of #2 seed alliance 4855 Batteries in Black and got 3595 Schrodinger's Hat as our 3rd alliance partner, but our alliance was eliminated in the Semifinals. However, we did get the PTC Design Award, and that qualified us to advance to Worlds!! We participated in the FTC demonstrations at the FRC Regional held at the Del Mar Arena and got honored for winning the Inspire Award at the San Diego Regional. While there, we got to show Jonathan Berling and his colleague our robot using their Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. And a bit later, Woodie Flowers stopped by to say hi, and we got him to sign our robot! We were honored with the Inspire Award at the San Diego Regional for the second year in a row! In addition, we were Captain of the Winning Alliance after picking 8606 Intergalactic Dragons and 10351 re.Evolution to be our allies - great work teams! We're looking forward to the FTC West Super-Regional event in Oakland, CA next month. |
